Talk by Diana McKinnon - Photographic Inspiration
Diana manipulates and deconstructs fabric which she then works on to create a variety of pictures from the English countryside to London scenes. Her work is built up of layers of fabric and silk paper. Machine threads are used like an artist's palette to create colour and texture and bring out the detail of the scene.

Sewing/Crafting sessions as part of Reigate Summer Festival
Drop-in workshops run by East Surrey Textile Group as part of Reigate Summer Festival.
​
10am - 12 noon - a sewing/crafting session for children of school age (accompanied by an adult) make a colourful elephant with a decorative stitched blanket if they are able to stay for the full session, or if time is short, they can make bookmarks or badges/brooches.
​
2pm - 4pm - a 'taster' activity workshop for adults creating paradise birds using simple applique and embroidery.
​
Hazara dress and embroidery from Afghanistan
Please note that this is a small display, not an exhibition - of recent acquisitions of dress and textiles made in Afghanistan but you may want to see these items if you are at the V&A. Embroidery and dress help to maintain a sense of communal identity for the Hazara people, both in Afghanistan and among diaspora communities. The vibrant examples in this display reveal the technical and design skills of the Hazara dressmakers and embroiderers.
NAOMI in Fashion
The first exhibition of its kind exploring the extraordinary career of fashion model Naomi Campbell. Through the work of leading global designers and photographers we celebrate her creative collaborations, activism and far-reaching cultural impact.

The Festival of Quilts
The Festival of Quilts was launched in 2003 in partnership with The Quilters’ Guild. 20 years on and it is now the biggest quilting show in Europe, featuring hundreds of quilts, workshops, talks, one of the world’s largest quilt competitions and a huge range of quilt materials and brands to shop from.
Bazaar Indian Summer Market
An event spread out in Marquees in Sussex Prairie Garden. Indian block printed fabrics, threads, embellishments and gorgeous clothes in cottons and vintage sari silk, semi precious designer jewellery, scarves, home furnishings and gifts – all ethically traded from India and Nepal. Alex’s curry “Dhaba” will be serving delicious authentic curries. There will also be talks by Jo Hall, the founder of Bazaar as well as related events including block printing.
Marvellous Makers Craft Afternoon
A bookable workshop for children of age 6 upwards (must be accompanied by an adult) run by East Surrey Textile Group for Reigate Library as part of the Summer Reading Challenge.
Come along and design and stitch your own bookmark or notebook cover.

Talk by Amanda Cobbett - Embroidering the Forest Floor
In this talk Amanda will discuss the basis of her inspiration, which comes from the countryside and the forest surrounding her home in the Surrey Hills. She will outline her working process and discuss the materials used to create her sculptures, which she does using free machine embroidery and a selection threads, papers and silks.

Talk by Gail Lawther - Trip around the World
Gail Lawther is an award-winning quilter and teacher and is the author of many crafting books. She began working full time in fabric and thread about 20 years ago, and cannot imagine a better way to earn her living! Talk by Sophie Levi-Kallin - Sew the Scene
Sophie sews scenes of (mainly) London from used/scrap fabrics and sewing machine embroidery. Sophie will describe her inspiration and method behind her art. This will include how she chooses which scenes to sew, her compositions, collecting and selecting fabrics, using the sewing machine stitch/embroidery to attach the pieces and add depth, definition and details.
